A little child is trying to fasten a button.Their fingers slip once, then twice. “I can’t do it,” they whisper, and push the shirt away. It would be easy to rush in, fix the button, and move on with the morning. Some mornings, that is exactly what needs to happen. But when there is a little room to linger, another possibility opens up. ![]() “That button is tricky,” you might say. “Would you like to try together?”No grand speech. No insistence that they feel confident immediately. Just a few words that make space for frustration and possibility at the same time. As children grow, they begin to make sense of who they are through experiences, relationships, and the language around them. Encouragement can become part of that picture, especially when it feels believable and is paired with real support. A child who hears “You can keep learning” also needs the freedom to struggle, ask for help, and take a break. This is what we love about affirmations at Mamie. Not the idea that a sentence can make every worry disappear. But the possibility of giving little humans gentle words to return to as they discover themselves. These are small sentences. Their meaning grows through everyday moments: when an adult listens without laughing at a fear, when a mistake is treated as part of learning, when a child is loved on a day they are not at their best. And some days A child will not believe the words yet. That is okay. We do not have to ask them to perform happiness or confidence. We can simply stay nearby and let the words meet them where they are. Maybe one day, faced with a difficult button or a bigger challenge, they will remember a gentler way to speak to themselves. And maybe that is where a little confidence begins. |
