You Can Love This Season and Still Find It Hard

Some evenings

The house finally goes quiet, and you realize you haven’t heard your own thoughts all day.

There are dishes in the sink. A tiny sock under the table. A storybook you could almost recite from memory.

You love the little person asleep in the next room so much it surprises you. And still, you are tired in a way that sleep alone may not fix.

Both things can be true.

You can treasure the small hand reaching for yours and sometimes wish for a moment when nobody needs you. You can be grateful for this chapter and still miss parts of who you were before it began. Love does not erase the hard parts, and the hard parts do not cancel the love.

Perhaps someone told you to enjoy every minute because children grow so quickly. They do grow. But a difficult Tuesday does not become easy just because you know you might miss it someday.

Children benefit from responsive, caring relationships.

Those relationships are lived by real people—with needs, limits, moods, and unfinished cups of tea. Connection does not require an endlessly cheerful parent. Sometimes it looks like saying, “I’m feeling overwhelmed. I’m going to take a minute, and then I’ll come back.” That, too, can show a child how feelings can be named and handled.

If today was mostly snacks, laundry, negotiations over shoes, and a few moments of laughter, it was still a day of being together. You do not have to turn every ordinary moment into a lesson or a memory worth photographing.

And if today was harder than you hoped, tomorrow does not require you to become a different person. Maybe it simply offers another chance to begin.

There is room in this story for your child’s growing heart. There is room for yours, too.
